Intro:
Today, we’re going to learn about how to grow green onions, simple and easy way of growing, so without any further let’s begin…
Green Onions are actually immature onions that are harvested before the bulbs mature. They have a green stock which is also called scallion. If you leave them in the ground for a long time, the bulbs will grow bigger and they will become regular onions. So, there are two ways of growing green onions, one is from seeds and the other is using the roots of the already existing green onion.
Take your green onions and cut the roots of them about 1 inch or 3/4 of an inch, and that’s what you’re gonna use in your soil. Once, you have cut out the root of the green onions and I wanna share with you one more thing that is you know normally, you just throw this away but if you want some green onions, it’s a continuous supply of green onions, you just plant these and they will grow and you can use the greens from these plants.
So, this is what normally, I do whatever green onions I buy, I cut a little bit more at the bottom about 3/4 of an inch of each of the stock and then I just plant them and in a few days, they start growing and then I just keep ruining the greens from the top and keep using it.
Now, once your planter is ready with a good potting soil mix (For soil mix: you need compost and a little bit of perlite, compost is for nutrition and perlite is for good drainage). You’re just going to take each of those, one by one, and just make a hole in it and cover it fully and you don’t have to place them too far apart because you can see that the bugs are really tiny. If you leave them for a long time there, then maybe the bugs will grow bigger, and then you can use them as regular onion. So, you’re just going to water them and leave them outside in the partial sun. After one week you will see that your onion bulbs will be started growing, so in the partial sun, they get direct sunlight and then mostly shade.
When two more weeks will pass, then you will see that some of them are almost three to four inches tall and some of them are a couple of inches tall. So, when you’re going a green onion, just make sure that the soil is a little bit moist all the time not too dry because it has a lot of leaves and they are kind of hollow, you need to keep them moist. So, when the onion plants are about ten to twelve inches tall, so you can harvest them, cut only the big leaves and you will see that within a few weeks, they’ll grow back again.
So, that’s how I keep using the same green onion plants forever, you keep chopping the leaves, and obviously, don’t pull out the whole onion because then you’ll have to again plant it. You just use the greens of those and you’ll see that in a few weeks this will regrow, so you can just keep on pruning and using it.
After a couple of weeks, you will see that your pruned green onions will be grown again and tall, similarly, from wherever you pruned them, new leaves would have come out and they would have started growing. It is the rooted side of the green onions which you normally throw away but in the soil, within few weeks they start growing, and then you have an evergreen supply of the greens of the green onions. You can use this same method with your seeds as well.
